The Marine Protected Area of Portofino was established in 1999 to protect the seabed stretching out around the Promontory of Portofino. It is one of the smallest Italian MPAs, extending for 374 ha, but is certainly among the most spectacular in the Mediterranean, with one of the richest biodiversities. The coast morphology, almost everywhere very steep, has created an underwater environment characterized by the presence of crags and caves that favour the development of a rich benthic fauna. Among the colourful underwater organisms, the famous red coral and several species of gorgonian corals, including the violescent sea-whip, with its big fans.
Under water it’s also easy to spot beautiful fishes: groupers, sea breams, common dentexes and brown meagres welcome divers and snorkelers even in shallow waters.
